This week Dr. Tobin makes a connection between two very special pieces, the prelude from book one, «Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir» (“The sounds and fragrances swirl through the evening air”) 1909, and Les Soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon (Evenings Lit by the Burning Coals). 1918. Debussy was inspired in both cases by poetry of Charles Baudelaire, listen to the presentation to see how that worked! A special treat at the end is Dr. Tobin’s performance of “parfums” on Debussy’s 1905 Bluethner piano in Brive la Gaillarde France.
The next in our Debussy Prelude series is a rather enigmatic prelude from Book I, la serenade interompue. It was reportedly composed after Debussy heard a performance by a not so successful guitarist that was repeatedly interrupted!
In this second video of our series, Dr. Tobin discusses the first Prelude from Book I. Planed chords, blocked tonal harmonies, and layers create a distinctive language. Debussy made many references to the art and culture of antiquity and ancient Greece, this Prelude is an interesting beginning to the set.
Dr. Tobin is starting a series of discussions about the Debussy Preludes.
In this first video, he discusses “The Girl With the Flaxen Hair” from Book I.
After playing the Bach e minor Toccata, the Mozart c minor Sonata, and Book I of the Debussy Preludes at Adam’s Music House on Sunday May 12, Dr. Tobin embarked on a tour of Switzerland.
